Resisting further pressure to become an 'Economy of War'

A recent LinkedIn post highlighted the UK's continuing flatlining economy, inflated energy prices (and further inflation of goods/services) following the US/Israel attacks on Iran, and an ever increasing cost of living challenge. The post went on to pose the question: if you were Rachel Reeves, what would you do?

Here's my answer:

"To answer the question I would resist moving further towards an "Economy of War" (see link below for precise definition) and not rely on turning a failing economy to focus on growing and profiting from war - which is what Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves are currently doing (and openly referring to). Robert F. Kennedy referred to the dangers of this back in 1968.

Link to Robert Kennedy's 1968 speech:

It is now clear that Reeves and Starmer do not know how to grow the economy in any other way. They now see war/defence as a backstop to their goal of achieving any kind of growth and are still failing, as this post highlights.

The cost of living continues to grow and our economy still flatlines. Taxes have already been hiked by an additional £60bn and borrowing has been ramped up by another £120bn.

To continue to answer the question raised I would introduce Purposeful Governance into Government to create a Purposeful Government, and into Public Services to transform outcomes, reduce systemically created waste, minimise unnecessary taxes, and at the same time increase capacity to do more.

I would repurpose the economy to a Purposeful Economy, to drive good growth (not any growth) and incentivise the application of Purposeful Governance in Enterprise, to transform engagement levels of staff (as well as consumers, markets and investors), innovation, enterprise flourishing, and meaningful, sustainable growth.

A Purposeful Economy focused on adding value for individuals, society, and the planet. Solving problems individuals, communities and our ecosystems face.

This is not the calm before the storm, we are now in the storm, and if we do not act soon we will be consumed by the storm.

The time for change is now."
